Peggy McClard Antiques Americana & Folk Art |
| A wonderful American watercolor on paper that gives us a glimpse
into romance in the first quarter of the 19th century. A basket of roses
at their feet, two lambs resting and an alert dog while the shepherd
hand feeds his girlfriend grapes. This circa 1825 love token was
painted by a budding artist and poet to express heartfelt love.
The painting was found with a poem in beautiful script on 19th century
paper:
O Love! almighty, though a child! No one to be fear'd than Tygers wild! Not Etna, half they fervor knows, When it with wildest fury glows! – O thou! to tender Maids a pest! Avaunt! nor trouble thus my breast With poison, Efsence of thy self. Avaunt! I say, though wicked Elf! – WEH (original) The poem is included with the painting in a paper sleeve on the back of the beautiful period gilt frame. Framed size is 9 1/2" x 8 ". Circa 1825. (#4236) $975 |
