A fun watercolor and graphite painting of a bird taken from a circa 1830 scrapbook.  The painting is of an exotic blue bird with white and rose breast, black head, wings and the tips of his tail feathers.  His orange beak curves as if he is thinking hard with down-turned mouth!  The bird is enchanting and comical all at once.  The young artist has him perched atop a pencil drawn tree stump with penciled ground beneath.  Below the graphite ground, in the lower right corner are the initials "E.P.".  The watercolor is hinged (with Japanese rice paper) on handmade blue paper which is mounted in a period cushioned gilt frame.  The gilding has mostly worn away to reveal the rose-colored bole beneath....a perfect color to accentuate the rose-colored breast of the bird!  The painting measures 5 1/4" x 3 3/4".  Framed size is 7 7/8" x 6 5/8".  I've even found a period brass hanging loop for the top of the frame.  Circa 1830.
